Lately I’ve been interested in the mapping of ideas. Ideas are slippery creatures when they’re being born, full of possibility but also faceless. It’s always easy to see an idea after it’s turned into something, but what about all of those pregnant times when the idea is developing?

That’s why artist sketchbooks are so fascinating to me–while most art tends to remove the hand of the maker, in the sketchbook the hand is very much in evidence, from shaky lines and discarded versions of ideas, how things slowly get born over time. It’s incredibly human, especially when there’s no guarantee that any idea will go anywhere. How many ideas are unborn for every one that is? I suspect it might be in the hundreds.
